The Famous Great Exodus of the Year! August 15th!
During the month of August, known as the peak of the summer season in Greece, the country observes its religious holiday season, which triggers a mass exodus from the capital to the islands. This phenomenon is particularly noticeable in major cities, where the typically bustling streets of the Greek capital become eerily quiet, and the city operates with limited staff in private institutions. It's worth noting that even the public sector shuts down during this time.
What is celebrated?
On the 15th of August, Greeks celebrate "Dekapentavgoustos," one of the most significant holidays in the Greek Orthodox Calendar. This day commemorates the Dormition of Panagia (Virgin Mary), symbolizing her death and ascension to heaven.
Where does everyone go?
The answer is, everywhere! but there are locations that take the superiority of the season, such as Tinos the top pilgrimage spot in the Cycladic island with the church of the Virgin Mary being the jewel of the occasion.
Anything special to look for?
Feasts! Not that we needed more reasons to celebrate Greek food! however,
Following a period of abstinence from August 1st to August 14th, during which meat, dairy products, fish, oil, eggs, and wine are avoided, a series of celebrations start on the evening of August 14th and reaches its peak on the subsequent day, the 15th.
Keep an eye out for Panegria (church music festivals)
The Panegiria traditionally take place in churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary, bringing together people of all ages to eat, drink, and dance.
